Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find the right dentist for me?

You must find a dentist who is certified by the National Dentistry Board or various state boards. A proper clinic will be able to inform you if their dentist has these qualifications. You can also find out for yourself by visiting the websites of these boards and looking up the dentist’s name in their roster.

Is it important that I like the dentist as well?

Yes. You must also be able to be comfortable with your dentist. Talk to each prospect first and see if they are informative and helpful and if you get along well with each other before you make your decision.

Who are good candidates for dental implants?

You should be in relatively good health to be a candidate for dental implants. Certain diseases or conditions such as diabetes or a heart condition may disqualify you. There must also be sufficient bone where the implant, or artificial root, can be fixed.

How are root canals treated?

Infections of the nerve of the tooth can be treated by either removing the bacteria and infected tissue by surgery, or by extraction. The goal of the first is to save the tooth. Your Oakland dentist will advise you of the best course to take depending on the condition of your tooth.

What are wisdom teeth, and should they be removed?

Wisdom teeth are also known as third molars as they are situated behind the second molar. They are frequently in an improper position, which results in damage to the tooth next to it or the formation of cysts. Dentists don’t usually remove wisdom teeth if they don’t present a large problem for the patient. But if they begin to hurt, extraction may often be the only answer.

Can tooth whitening damage your teeth?

Teeth whitening done by a professional, or by using kits bought at the dentist’s office, are not believed to pose any great risk to the patient’s dental health, but it is still a relatively new procedure and the long-term effects have still not been determined.
